Fiddler on the Roof — Lekenik’s Anatevka
City
Lekenik
A small village. A great film story. Lekenik became Anatevka in Fiddler on the Roof, the musical that won three Academy Awards.
ExploreAbout This Location
Lekenik landed a role of its own in one of cinema’s most celebrated musicals. Its Turopoljska Street became Anatevka, home to Tevye the milkman, his five daughters and traditions that love keeps putting to the test.
Its wooden houses appeared in a film that earned three Academy Awards and eight nominations, including Best Picture. Director Norman Jewison transformed one family’s story into a magnificent musical, while Topol gave Tevye an unforgettable face: a little weary, often witty and always ready for another conversation with God.
Who created the Oscar-winning musical adaptation? John Williams. His name is woven into Lekenik’s film history, alongside the Academy Awards Fiddler on the Roof received for cinematography and sound.
The loveliest part of this story can also be discovered beyond the screen. Lekenik still preserves houses that played Anatevka before the cameras. This cinematic world has a tangible presence — in timber, façades and a street that travelled to another time on the big screen.
